TK-5 Virtual

JCS-LIVE

Lifelong Independent Virtual Education

TK-5 Virtual Program

The JCS-LIVE TK-5 virtual program provides a combination of parent-supported independent home study with the guidance and instruction of a certificated virtual classroom teacher.  Students in this program will receive all of their curricula and will be enrolled in weekly virtual classes.  Students will also have the opportunity to participate in monthly field trips and extra-curricular activities.

Each student will receive a Chromebook or similar device and supplemental materials upon enrollment.  The mentor teacher work with each family to discuss and determine appropriate curricula to meet the individual needs of each student. All materials are included, and many options are available. Our goal is to personalize each student’s educational plan.

Students do not receive a specific amount of EUs (educational units); however, if a student requires supplemental activities or materials that are educational in nature and needed to support learning, these will be provided.  Mentor teachers will work with each family to determine which items are needed.

Enrichment activities are provided at no cost to the student.  These include field trips, events on campus, park days, and more.  Parents and siblings not enrolled in JCS-LIVE will have a small fee to attend field trips (normally a discounted price for admission).

Upon enrollment, families will meet virtually with a mentor teacher who will set up the student’s plan for the semester.  A Master Agreement will be signed and the student’s materials will be ordered.

Students enrolled in JCS-LIVE K-5 will complete their daily assignments online with the help of a parent or guardian, and meet every other week with their mentor in a virtual environment (on Fridays or after classes during the week). Tutoring will be available for students who need extra support.

It is expected that students spend approximately 30-40 minutes per day on each subject, including Physical Education every day of the school week; however, the schedule is flexible and can be at the best time of day for the student and parent.  Students can also work ahead on a weekend.  Parents are expected to guide their students and support them in their daily studies and assignments. All changes to assignments / lessons must be discussed in advance with the mentor teacher.

A discussion will be held for students who are unable to complete 80% of their work each week to determine if independent study is an appropriate placement for the child and family.

Students are enrolled in their grade level based on the previous school enrollment or birth date if in Kindergarten.  Retention and acceleration are rarely considered, but can be discussed with the mentor teacher.

Students in JCS-LIVE, grades 3-5, take the CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) , state testing each spring, typically in April.  The academic tests are taken virtually.  Fifth grade students participate in physical fitness testing in the winter, typically in February.  The physical fitness tests must be completed in person at a JCS facility.  Additional testing will be done by the mentor teacher either at a designated time online, or during the student’s every other week mentor meeting.
